I Promise I'm Alive
Whew, gotta get this thing going!
Life has kicked us in the teeth this year so I have not gotten this off the ground. I will do my best to keep up with it moving forward!
Thank you to the handful of folks who have stuck around. Please read, click all the links (it helps email providers know I’m a real person), and reply to let me know your thoughts.
Science and Around the World
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences conducted some excellent research on how Python’s organs, and in particular their hearts, change during eating and fasting.
Turns out that Ball/Royal Pythons increase their own mass by almost 25% after eating! This increase in organ expansion is a more concrete example of why overfeeding your snakes can harm their health. If you keep pythons of any species (or any other snakes for that matter) this is a good quick read.
I found this story months ago in a 1440 morning email, and never stuck to the newsletter, so it hasn’t been sent out.
Having sponsors keeps me motivated, and I was beyond excited to get sponsored by 1440! They are a non-biased morning news source that I recommend to everyone and personally read every single day. If you want a quick wrap-up (a 5-minute read) of world news to include science and tech every day, check out the sponsor section below!
Hobby and Industry News
USARK played a critical role in securing a solution to the ban on the light bulbs we need for our herps.
If you weren’t keeping up, the Department of Energy enacted a ban that impacts all of our high-output bulbs we use for ectotherms and herps. While the intention was to reduce low-efficiency bulbs being sold in the US, there was no analysis done about other ripple effects…or really any analysis at all…

USARK and all of us who support them or keep reptiles were quick to react, and last week the DOE announced an exception for bulbs intended for animal care!
This is a huge near-miss and win for the whole community. Make sure you support the non-profits that fight for our rights!

I noticed that the catch was a bit loose on an enclosure and made a note to fix it over the weekend…it didn’t last until the weekend…Lesson learned!
One of our adult females who has been paired this year escaped and went on a tour. Luckily, I found her safe and sound in my shoe!
It made for a cute photo op, though.
We are back on for Thursdays!
It has been hard to keep up with and honestly, next month is going to be pretty rough. I plan to try to keep it up anyway.
I will get the giveaways off the ground after June, to include the special one for my first readers!

I have read 1440 as my primary news source for nearly 3 years now.
I was ecstatic when they offered to sponsor this newsletter. I have always been a big fan and recommend it to everyone who gets 🤢 of all the crazy one-sided news. It’s a daily 5-minute read for me every weekday morning.
There is always a “Need to Know” section at the top, and then other areas below, like Entertainment, Markets, and Politics.
My favorite is always the Science and Tech section, though, and that is where I found the science article from!
